Raina and Po Po vs. a Big Black Lab: Who will run first?

Here's sneak peek from “Murky Passions and Scandals” featuring a big black Lab from the “Name the Dog Contest” in my newsletter.

Raina and Po Po vs. Big Black Lab

Po Po pulled out two plastic bags filled with doggie treats and shook them. “One is laced with marijuana and the other with Prozac. One of these is bound to mellow the dog.”

Raina’s eyes widened. “What if you end up poisoning the dog?”

“I consulted with a vet and got his okay on this. Mia will probably thank us for solving her dog problem.”

Raina didn’t even know how to respond so she didn’t. Unlike the rest of the family who thought Po Po might be losing it, Raina believed her grandma was perfectly aware of what she was doing and using her age as a cover up when needed.

Raina and Po Po followed Mia into the mansion. The side table was upright, but the shredded curtains were still in place. As they crossed the foyer, Po Po shook her a bag of doggie treats.

Mia leaned close to Raina and lowered her voice. “What is she doing?”

“She thinks your dog has anxiety,” Raina whispered back.

“My vet told me the same thing. He’s taking Prozac and seeing a pet psychiatrist once a week.”

Raina’s brows rose to her hairline. You got to be kidding me?

“Hey, don’t judge. My dog is my baby.”

Raina didn’t know how to respond. Growing up in the Bay Area in tight quarters meant there was no room for a pet. And later when she moved into her grandmother’s house, she was reeling from her father’s death. She never developed an affinity for animals. “We all have our weaknesses,” she finally said.

The floor shook from the mad gallop of a Black Lab the size of the miniature horse. The dog came into view in the hallway. His mouth was opened, and his tongue flopped from the corner, globs of saliva dribbled to the floor with each step.

Raina’s mouth went dry with fear. The dog probably wouldn’t bite her, but she didn’t want to find out either. She willed her feet to move, but they were glued to the floor.

Po Po tossed the bags of doggie treats at the Black Lab, but he didn’t spare them a glance. He raced toward them like he wanted a new chew toy.
